window shopping for a 5er

Hey guys, my car loan should be finished in about a year and I was already thinking about selling it and picking up a newer BMW. I'm thinking either a e36 M3 or maybe a E39 540i sport. I like the idea of getting a 540 because I know it'll be a comfy cruiser that can also really perform. I see so many M3's around town, so I thought that clean 540i would be a little different. Plus I maybe starting a family in the near future and I gotta plan for that.
I have a few questions for you E39 experts, did the E39 540 come with two different manual transmissions? I know they have the six speed on the sport model, but did they ever make a 5 spd as well. Plus is there any particular year that's any better then the rest? I'm just trying to do my homework on this, all I know is that I want a 540 sport with 6spd, but I'll settle for a 5. Give me your opinions guys.

I beleive that the E39 528 came with a 5spd but the 540 only came with a 6speed. I could be mistaken but i am almost positive. My 98 is a 6speed.

E39 540 comes in 6speed, no 5speed, I think it was 99 that the 540 started to get vanos, 98 was the first year for shadowline trim
