cold start problem with e39

I have a 97 e39 540i and Ive been having issues during cold starts especially through winter. Starting the car is not a problem but when started the rpm dips down as if the car is going to die and right when its about to shut off it automatically shoots the rpm up to stay alive. When i start moving its okay but at a light while idling the same thing as if the engine is struggling to stay on. When the car warms up everything is fine even when starting while the engine is still warm everything is fine. Ive tried looking for this problem but can only find starting issues....any ideas?

you have the exact same problem i had, you need to change your vanos seals.
this is a very comon problem on the 5'ers
i had mine done at RMP and it was actually way cheaper than i though it would be.

all you need is a new set of seals and it was around 350 for parts and labor from what i remember
give the guys at RMP a call and they will do the rest

Your 1997 E39 540 does not have Vanos, check for intake leaks. The V8 had Vanos from 1999 on.

Fix

Mark is right. I replaced the ccv valve on the rear of the intake, it fixed the problem. It was never changed by the previous owner at 150k km it was overdue. A very common component to fail.
Now the Engine starts and idles well no matter how cold it is, before it was replaced it would stall sometimes, lots of white smoke and flickering cell light.

It had failed and oil was flooding into the intake, not too difficult but time consuming and it's easy to strip the 7 torx bolts. While I was back there replaced all the heater hoses, sucking jet pump valve, brake booster line, etc. If it's due flush all the coolant from the block too.

Check all the other vacuum lines, I found one loose. Next I am changing the air intake gaskets and cleaning the maf.

I had a similar problem with my 530i at cold start and braking/stopping--the car struggled to stay on. It was a vacuum leak. Rocco at RMP Motors fixed it in less than 5 min!!!
