Please help me find this part

I'm looking for an engine splash shield for my 2003 bmw 540i M. Dealers are the only ones that seem to be able to get the part in but at $238.00 plus labour is crazy. I have posted in the "looking for section" but looking directly for help from you guys. Any help would be much appreciated in helping me find this part.

Part No. 5171 2498 988 (the M bumper comes with a different shield)

http://www.maxbimmer.com/forums/show...74#post1434074

The look of the car with the sagging shield is painfull and the noise it makes when I go over a pump is causing me to grow some gray hair. HELP!!!

Adam: I'll be looking for your help once I get the part

I'm sure one of our local sponsors has one sitting around for cheap.

Uh, define local. Since we're in Ottawa and you are in Missasauga, posting in the Ottawa section.

edit: bimmerspecialist can only get it from the USA, not Canada.

Have you considered pulling the old one off and repairing it?

$175, get it shipped to Ogdensburg or send them an e-mail asking how much to ship at your door...

Forget labour. DIY or bring me coffee and I'll do it for you. Actually, make that a ginormous slushie and I'll do it.

The other option is to call a wreckers and get a used one BUT are you sure you need a new one? It's not just a matter of popping the screws back in with a bigger washer or soemthing?

Actually, lots of people take them off too...

Just stop by if you see me tooling in the garage with it and I can have a look if you'd like.

Thanks all,

Joe, you got your self a deal! Trust me shipping something of this size will cost you more than the part itself...don't foget customs and handling fees. Also, it's broken beyond repair (in my opinion). I'd be VERY happy to find a used one but they are hard to find.

Jason, you got PM.

Pelican Parts has that part, about $240 USD shipped to Canada.

USPS shipping, so as far as i know, no custom fees.

good luck with your search.

Don't be afraid of the shipping unless you get a quote. Besides, then you can order all sorts of other stuff like, smoked side markers and oil filters...

Hey,

So I looked at this last night.. the center plastic undertray is not broken, only the piece with the air temp sensor on the passenger side. I was able to reattach it a little more firmly. I believe this is the part number: 51712498990. I found it on here:

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...27&hg=51&fg=75

One problem is though that the center undertray mount points / tabs are bent. So on the drivers side, it lines up with the left tray, but it gently slopes up until it is flush with the bumper cover on the right side. The right (broken) tray sits a full 1.5" lower than the center section. Anyone know what the mounting points for the center piece are like? I imagine you could just remove the center piece and bent the mounting points back, but maybe its not that simple.

However, that wasn't the source of the noise. There is a large rattle coming from the rear passenger side of the car. I found a piece of plastic rubbing and loose, braced it with card board but it didn't help. Any ideas?

Yeah the mount points would be super easy to fix, they're just tabs, then those annoying metal backing clips go on there, and the screw for the panel then just goes through and locks. If that piece is broken it's also pretty cheap, even from the dealer. I destroyed mine when I ran over my blue box, and had it replaced in 30min. i think it was $50 from the dealer, providing it's similar price to the M-bumper one.

For the rattle, could it be a broken shock mount in the rear? They've been known to go.

Crap, I didn't even think of the shock mounts. Can you see them from the trunk? I bet that's it now that I think about it, it only rattled over bumps.

Unfortunately even to look at them, the rear seat and full rear parcel shelf needs to come out, plus the speaker pods.. It's somewhat of a PITA. You can pretty much fully replace the front struts in a quarter the time it takes to even get the rear shocks out.

Edit: and god help you if you have a rear sun shade

Nice. I'm doing my shocks next summer...

As for the piece, I just bought the passengers side. Common piece to be destroyed.

Could it be rear sway bar links? I had to my front ones. Only rattled on bumps.
