what's a good 'el cheapo' paint shop in Ottawa? with semi-decent quality

need a 1 or 2 coat, full respray.. car already prepped

what do they even cost these days for one of those?

You can try Ray's, just off Gladstone. I was impressed with the paint they did on my SVT Contour, but not the rustproofing. If they still do it for cash, you can save some money. But I can guarantee you, you're not looking at $399!

I have heard that Caron does a good job too.

maaco sucks. remember with bodywork you get what you pay for. $399 will get you nothing with substance, especially a total respray

Well if the car is already prepared, and masked and with most trims off

it should'nt be that pricey...

a full respray takes few hours... it's all the prep work that makes the bill go up.

I buy paint sometimes:

1 gallon of decent quality stuff costs $400-$600 just for the basecoat (1 gallon). More if its red.
Cheap basecoats actually cost you more: horrible color match, horrible coverage and bad mettalic control

1 gallon reducer for basecoat: $80

A gallon kit of clearcoat (reducer and hardener) is at least $200 for a cheap clear.

If you want the best premium paint like Glasurit or Sikkens, a gallon kit of clear will cost $500 alone. Sikkens is what Otto's collision center uses.

So far you are: $680 just for materials alone, not to mention the labor.

BTW you did not happen to use rattle can primers did you? They are ok for small spots, but 2K primers (catalyzed) will have more build, less shrinkage and better rust protection (epoxy).

1 gallon should be enough for E30/E36.

Hey guys, I've been lurking for a while but a group spray, can't pass that up. I need a re spray, but wouldn't it be lame if we all got our cars the same colour? lol

Well if we get a few guys I might start calling around to see if we can get a group package. I got a really good quote from a shop on belfast for my e36 which included rust on the rears and licenseplate\trunklid area. I think he had quoted me 1600 for a full respray and like 6-700 for the two rear qrt, 2 doors, hood, and licenseplate\trunklid area.

If guys do their own body work or prep i'm sure we can get a decent group respray deal somewhere.

i've heard from a couple of bodyshop that THE most expensive color is Red because of the pigment... the cheapest on the other hand is black/white.

i think that if you do your own body work and then show up to a place like Maaco you could get something pretty good. A guy on R3v prepared his E30 M3, masked it and brought it there, according to him they did a great job... and the cost of it was only a grant.

I can only offer this advice: if you can do your own prep work to the point that the car will come out looking professional, you might as well spend the extra $200 for plastic to line your garage and paint it yourself. 90% of a good finish is in the prep work and its a helluvalot harder than it seems.

i've always wanted to be able to that kind of stuff for myself, maybe ill exercise my virtue of patience and take on some body work, all this to say i might be interested later on in the summer
