F10 BMW M5 some new mule footage! Its Fast!



BMW's 2011 5-Series (F10) and M5 caught here on video doing some road and track testing, all roaring engines and screeching tires.

So far this week, there has been a teaser video from BMW which only outlined a silhouette of the next iteration of its mid-sized premium sedan, and an unverifiable leaked photo, allegedly from a BMW dealer, of the front corner of the upcoming 5-Series. The only thing we can safely surmise from what we've seen so far of the 2011 5-Series is that it will be staying pretty close to home design-wise. More of a rounding out of the lines than anything else.

BMW will be premiering the 2011 5-Series via a Live-Stream netcast on Monday, November 23rd at 20h00 CET (Central European Time). It will also likely go on display at the Los Angeles auto show in early December too. The usual critiques can be expected - of the "it doesn't go far enough" or "just don't like it, prefer the old one," variety. But it will ultimately be the sales figures which will spell out whether the new 5-Series, possibly facing a cannibalizing effect from the recently released 5-Series GT model, is a success or not.

haha hey lets give Cadillac respect where its due, the CTS-V is an unreal car. Especially for its price.

True the Cadillac is nothing to laugh at.
It's a real car with great performance.

wow, they really took the rigt steps with it's cosmetic design. Do we know of a release date for the f10?

bi-turbo v8? really? too bad they scraped that sick sounding v10 :/

v8 sounds nice, very muscular, but that v10 at high revs sounds very super-car-ish

pretty cool to see the brake force display lights in action...didn't realize it blinks the CHML too. thought it was just a set of extra lights in the tail lights.

Downsizing and decreased emissions

The new BMW M5 will be sensational in terms of it's power combined with how frugal it will be thanks to advanced technology.

586 HP and 720 Nm of torque.

Thanks to more power, lower weight and more aerodynamic design the new BMW M5 will cut the 0-100 km/h to 4,4 s.

Goal is to lower fuelconsumption 30% and so far "only" 25% is acheived but 15 months is left until launch. Interestingly, BMW M CEO mentioned 20% decrease here.

All 5-series will get electronically powered steeringservo whic saves weight and fuel. Effort has also been given to reduce the friction between compinents between the engine and transmission, auto start/stop function and several functions that are activated only when needed. Some of them are powered by electricity that is created thermoelectronically from heat by the exhaust.

The largest cuts in fuelconsumption is thanks to active aerodynamics. Thousands of manhours have been spent in windtunnels with the new M5 which have resulted in an intelligent routing of the airflow past the front and side of the M5, for example with the help of active airflow in the front, the grille and the headlights. This solution only have decreased consumption with 2,5%.

Another innovation is small movable flaps near the wheelwell. They change angle with speed and makes the M5 cut better through the air; of significant importance since 30% of the airresistance can be attributed to the wheelwells. The active wheelhouseflaps also makes the roadholding better since it increases downforce.

The new BMW M5 F10 is also rumoured to have "mini wind turbines" behind the grille that are activated when the car is rolling or braking; along the concept of Efficient Dynamics.

In theory the new M5 could be equipped with some form of hybridsystem: the competitor Mercedes AMG is working on a solution with a electronicengine between the petrolengien and transmission that stores kinetic energy when braking, which is released when accelerating. BMW has no such plans for the BMW M5. The previous head of development Burkhard Göschel started the development of KERS (Kinetic Energy Recovery System) along the principels of Formula 1 saison of 2009, but that has now been scrapped. It is considered more important to bet on leaner cars than highpowered engines.

The KERS-system BMW developed for roadcars added 50 HP at each driveaxle which came from a supercapacitor which could give a 10 s powerboost. Charged up when braking it was deemed to heavy for a roadcar and also effected the weightdistrubition negatively.

The programmable M-Button will also be present in this generation of the M5. New userselectable settings are activerollbars and the setting of automatic powerdelivery between the rearwheels.

The Powerbutton that can be found in the E60 and E61 M5 will be scrapped and replaced by an Efficient Dynamics button: where to maximase the fuelconsumption.

All ights are LED incl. daytime runninlights (also mentioned by the Autocar article here).

Options are carbonroof and 20' wheels (19' standard), sportseats (?) and active steering(?). Launch is first quarter 2011 and no M5 Touring.
