E30 Tourings (not ix's) have battery in the front.
I don't recall the name of the battery I'm running in my Touring, but, it's defiitely bolted down, not strapped.
I'm running an Optima red top in my 318is (in the trunk) with no issues, so I don't know if the optima would fit up front under the hood

There is a site called realoem.com. It has exploded veiw diagrams for just about every BMW. Check out this site and you should be able to figure
out how it should go in. It should also give you the parts numbers of the peices your missing.

My battery is in the front in my vert too... I checked realeom.com, and bought the mounting parts from the dealer. I can't figure out how to keep it down though, so I just left it. You wouldn't think these things would pass a safety with our batteries loose, would you? And yet...

part #8 clamps down over the lower "lip" of the battery holding it very firmly in place...at least it does in my car...I don't use the strap
