best winter tire size for e46 m3 (17')

i have
oem m68 rims for my m3

what would be the best tire setup for winter?
225/45/17 all around?

i was told it is better to use a more narrow width for winter tires.
Therefore, the stock size (205/50/17) might be better than 225/45/17

Please correct me if I am wrong

from what i understand, narrow tires cut through snow better. wider tires have more surface, so there is more area to grip.

thats just my understanding.
