Powdercoat chrome window trim question?

hey guys, just wondering if anyone here has powdercoated their chrome trim on a e46 coupe? I took my trim off today and brought it to the powdercoating place and the guy told me he can do it no problem but I have to remove all the rubber and reglue it after so it doesnt melt, my mechanic told me the rubber will be VERY hard to glue back and to buy the trim in black instead of powdercoating it... I am already buying all the lower window trim because it bent when I removed it but the top pieces are NOT cheap from the dealer (I think 380 each side lol)

If anyone has done this before or has any suggestions let me know, im not in a huge rush as my car is in the paint shop for 2-3 weeks...

Thanks!

I DIY mine after the bodyshop did a shitty job (it chipped too easily, even on a second repaint attempt by them). Buy SEM TRIM BLACK it comes in an aerosol can. I took the upper trims off, sanded the chrome down hard for a few hours and then put 3 coats of the SEM Trim Black. It's been a month through some sandblasting roads and I have zero chips on the trim

hey anu, I saw that SEM stuff on fanatics someone posted but the link on ebay says no international shipping, where did you purchase your spray? was one can enough for the 3 coats obviously? Also you told me before all your bottom trims are oem flat black just your top trim was painted correct? you sanded the chrome with 500 gritt sand paper and just sprayed 3 coats and thats it?

Thanks!

Here's all the info you need:

-The lower two peices per side are OEM flat black strips.
-I sanded the upper trims very aggressively with 80grit to remove the shitty paintjob from before, and then smoothed it out with 400. Put 2-3 coats of SEM on it. It is VERY IMPORTANT that you sand the chrome down so hard. I mean really rape, pillage, and murder that chrome shit all at the same time. it should be left dull and lifeless.
-Go to www.SEM.ws and look up their Ontario retailers. They don't sell this stuff at CT/Partsource, or whatever. Most of their carriers in Canada are wholesale distributors that sell to the public. The product you want is SEM Trim Black #39143
http://semaerospace.com/cms/TRIM+BLACK+/98.html it was around 15 bucks IIRC.

edit: Here, I pulled up the link for ya http://semproducts.com/Suppliers3.asp?country=Ontario

sweet

looked at that link and seems they have a distributor in my town so ill call tommorow and hopefully they have it on hand since mines not painted and just is just chrome right now should I just sand it with 400... For the lower oem black trims the rear pieces have to be stuck on with 3mm tape or something? where did you get that because part source doesnt have that in my town I dont think....

Thanks bro!

P.S Did you have as much fun as I did while taking the trim off? I cant wait to put it back on :p

I'd still go lower grit first to seriously roughen it up, and then higher grit to smooth out the scuffs.

Lower trim was replaced with OEM matte black pieces. It was around $200 for the four parts (2 per side).

sem

hey I went and bought the SEM for like 8 bucks and some sand paper (80 and 400 grit) Also ordered the lower trims from the dealer but there not 200$ like you said! (unless you got a deal ).... I guess ill tell you why they call it the stealership (450 for lower trims with tax!) the worst thing is they wanted 380$ a pop for the upper trim that im gonna spray with the SEM trim stuff for 8 bucks hopefully it works good

Oh well this is a must for my car once its painted... Thanks Anu!

wow

okay so today I go to pick up my lower trims, so the guy at the parts department hands them to me and there chrome! I told him I wanted to change my existing chrome to black when I ordered them and must have confused him lool..anyways Its ok as I found out the black trim is alot cheaper LOL... all 4 lower pieces in flat black $232 with change including tax... so thats alot better then 450$ for the chrome trim lol... im pretty sure it was exactly half the price for the black trim opposed the black trim... So for a total of like 250$ you can do what me and anu are doing and have blacked out trim!
