I don't think that offset will work on the e39. Plus I would hazzard a guess that the center bore won't fit either since the e39 is a weird one in that respect.
But even if they did fit I'm not sure I would like that style on an e39, I still like the style 5's. I think if I did change wheels it would be to 18" staggered M-Pars.

I agree with both statements.
ACS Type III would look very nice also.
I want an E39.

Style 5s are nice.
Staggered setups are not my cup of tea, especially since I hear they adversely affect handling.

I agree, non-staggered is ideal, but it's kinda a catch 22. The 540 really needs more grip than the 235's it currently has, and I think BMW also realized this and that's why the later 540's came stock with staggered wheels running 265's out back. If I could run 265's all around I would, but that introduces a whole new set of problems.
And really, running staggered won't hurt the handling so much as it just increases the level of grip out back, which can make it feel like the car is understeering more than normal, but really it's understeering the same amount since the fronts remained the same size. This balance is easily corrected with a stiffer rear sway bar, which is cheap and is already in the plans.
and lets not forget the M5 runs a staggered setup, and it's arguably one of the best handling sedans of it's time.

If I was to go for rims, actually (after hearing the prices) I would consider the OEM M5 rims -- they apparently go for some pretty decent prices on the M5 Boards. But the F1 GS-D3s are pretty new, and I like the style 5s....and I'm cheap, no point in trying to hide that. Add in the other little bits and pieces that I need, and I'll likely keep rolling on the 5s.
That and it would keep me from giving in to the urge to buy an M5 kit.

I'm not fond of my staggered setup, it's introduced a whole ton of oversteer that wasn't present before. I suppose I could get some different sized sway bars and maybe **** with the tire pressure but it's just a huge hassle that could be fixed by going back to a non staggered setup.
With that being said, style 5's are awesome.
Bear: interested in some staggered M68's

Im not a hudge fan of the m68s style ... however I have never seen them in staggered setup... photos?
If I had the money for a new setup I would go with 5s or 37s ... the first thing I notice when I see adams car is the rim's...very tight setup

Did you mean understeer? Ie, you turn, and it doesn't feel like it wants to turn and pushes into the corner?
On chromius's point, because of the increased rear traction, if you give the car some throttle and the rears stick, it will pull weight off the front end and reduce the front end traction, causing push, but without the staggered setup you would just have oversteered or spun the rear end. In any case, you wouldn't have gone faster. Its just more difficult to manage.
But, I agree, the 540 needs more straight-line traction. Before I went with stagger though, if I felt the need to increase traction, I'd just get much better, stickier tires all the way 'round.
Edit: that is in addition to the typical unbalance caused by the stagger, i mean, not the sole cause. It just gets overlooked more than the usual balance issue.

Really, they are pretty hard on gas with 245/45/17 winters on them. But they look kickass.
