I would do more investigating on your own first, just as you mentioned.

If you go to the dealer, just drive into the service area and ask a guy to listen to the car for the noise on the spot. Giving it them to inspect for a day etc could cost you more than its worth...especially if they don't find anything, or say its nothing to worry about.

Also important to note that cold weather does play a factor on all cars, and random noises creep up during this time of the year.
