GPS really isn't that accurate for peak speed, but it's quite good at measuring the average speed.
If you're willing to sit on the speed limiter for awhile, then a GPS can give you an idea of your speed in relation to your speedometer.
However, basic inaccuracies in a GPS unit prevent it from accurately measuring the top speed.
