The $25 charger probably takes over 10hrs to charge versus 1.5hr for the Canon. And NiCd batteries have "memory", so they have to be fully discharged before you can charge them, NiMh can be charged anytime and carry a bit more power.

Radioshack has a NiMh batteries (4pcs) with charger for $39.99.

Blacks (square one) also has some other brand NiMH combo for $59.99.

Cheapest I've found the CBK-100 is $41.50usd on the net.
