sorry to hear that. My key does the same thing in both of my E36's but what fixes it is if you turn the steering wheel until it clicks (locks) and the key comes out.
I encountered this problem for the first time when I was really drunk after a club night, and I went to go driving (don't ask, I was being stupid), but the key wouldn't turn. I guess it was a sign or something, so I heeded it and took a taxi home. The next day it was still not turning, and then the key got jammed, so out of frustration I grabbed the steering wheel and shook it back and forth. I heard a click, and then the key turned!!
Call charlie and see if he can get you a better price on parts if it's not being serviced already.
