Network Specialist here (for over 19 years), this above is utter rubbish.

The laser in a CD / DVD reader does not very its power based on a disk in the drive, the only way you can damage a drive with a CD is below:

Warped disk
Disk with sticker on (this is by fair the way most was drives are damaged)

Labels make the disk unbalanced so it can hit the head or put pressure on the cap spin motor.
