Hm not sure why they're rubbing at stock height with the early models wider arches..
My old rim specs (Farintosh's new rims) are 16x8 et23 with 10mm spacers in the front, they were mounted on a late model lowered on eibachs+bilsteins with flares and 205/45 tires with no rubbing issues. They may or may not be the mentioned set you guys were re-engineering.
Even with shot stock suspension they didn't rub. I'd say increase the offset a little if possible and lower your tire profile to 40 or 45 and see how it works out.
