Exactly this... lol... IAT's will match what the IC can cool basically.
Most CAI's will show gains not because of placement, but because of flow increases... if the factory setup isn't restrictive in the first place, gains will be minimal... If the aftermarket setup is worse (maybe not with flow capacity, but say with velocity and/or turbulence) you might loose power.
On NA cars, a CAI will show gains if the induction air is coming from a colder area then the engine bay of course.
