I found this out when I was joesing for a 545 a couple of years ago -- ask whether the dealer knows if there have been any coolant leaks. BMW put rubber seals on the main coolant pipe from the front to the back of the engine. Rubber O-rings in a high heat area? Let's just say they don't exactly have the best reputation for lasting a long time. Without this kit (http://www.allgermanauto.com/product/index.html
) or a similar one, the teardown to fix those two little seals is a big job -- basically, the whole front of the engine has to come off.
