I pay 0. I feel for you though, starters... eeek. There is a trick involving 'making' a contorted box wrench. I think it would be less stressful lifting the engine out.

Still 300$ just for labour is painful for a common replacement item like a starter. Then again I've never had an e30 starter completely fail in over 12 years (that's why I have 4 sitting around collecting dust). I had one that was making stupid noises, and eventually only started some of the time. (probably solenoid).

Performance one step at a time.
