It is a bumper style case so the front and rear are exposed, however, the case is designed to lift the front and back glass so it does not make contact with a flat surface if you set the phone down.
Customer bought one last week, I helped install it, it slipped out of his hand and the phone fell about 4' to the tiled floor. He picked it up and expected to see a shattered screen and all that there was is a scuff on the anodized aluminum finish.
He bought 5 more as gifts after that.
