When you apply the tape (grey foam tape with red liner), make sure the ambient temperature is between 16-30 degrees C. That's the optimum temperature range for excellent tape adhesion.
Before applying tape to the moldings, apply some 3M primer (adhesion promoter) and let dry before you roll on the tape.
As mentioned, you need to also clean any dirt/grime/wax/grease from the mating panels on your car. Isoproyl alcohol works very well.
Remember, preperation is key.
