If the crank sensor was bad wouldn't the fuel pump not kick on? I had an e36 with a bad crank sensor that was diagnosed by another shop as a fuel pump. I then determined the pump was not coming on and I had no spark and checked the crank sensor.
Maybe its different on the e30, but It wouldn't make sense to me.
