From my desk: It's better to arrange it without compensation. Such as you drive 1 week, the other person drives the next week.
You need to disclose carpooling activities to your broker/agent. If you get paid to do it, you need an OPCF 6 (carry passengers for compensation) endorsement on your policy. If no money exchanges hands you still need to disclose it to your insurance co. however, they typically don't charge you anything for it.
