Ya, i grabed a M coupe shifter from the dealer a few years ago. Big difference over stock. Basically if you have the ZF E36 (328/ S52 M3)tranny, than you use the M coupe shifter. If you have the Gettrag E36 tranny (325/ S50 M3) then you can use the shifter from the 328/M3 for a reduced throw.
Compared to the price of some of these aftermarket shifters, you can't go wrong with the OE one. Only trick is, if you have the ZF tranny then you have to bend it slightly or the shifter will sit a bit forward.
