e39 questions - and lots of them

Hey guys, can you help me please?

1) The display shows that my passenger stopping light wasn't working. Changed the bulb - the light wont go away, all light bulbs in the taillight work. how to reset it?

2) Air bag warning came on - how to switch it off?

3) While driving the cd changer acts up - you step on the brakes and cd starts skipping, you step on gas - all ok... what's up with that?

4) Cassete stuck in the business tape player won't come out - should I try to demolish the tape player?

car - 97 528ia

1) Need a reset tool

2) I would check out the wiring... (or get someone to do it) then use a reset tool

3) Sounds like your CD is a little broken... might have to swap the unit out

4) I would gently try and remove it... but who really still uses Cassettes around here...?

Would the piece of wire work (as with the oil reset?) and where can I find pin scheme of what is what? should I go with the bmw stuff for the changer or aftermarket (mine wasn't playing or hardly anytime playing burnt cd's)? and yes, i use cassetes - music from back home, plus I'm a 90's style guy :) Oh, yeah, MP3 player adaptor too - great use for the tape player

why would you need a reset tool?

I've replaced many bulbs & the warning just goes away, there might be something else wrong.

if your airbag warning light came on I suggest to get it scan, the problem might not go away by just resetting it, my airbag light is on in my 540i, I know it's the passenger buckle, tried erasing it, but it came back as soon as someone used it.

The passenger light, do you mean low beam? In any case, whichever bulb it's refering to, take the bulb out and spray electrical contact cleaner in the housing and replace. A contact is dirty somewhere, causing higher resistance and flagging that msg.

The air bag light can get expensive to fix, fyi. Sometimes hard to troubleshoot and nobody resets that light for less than $50 usually. Buggers.

sorry for the question about the light - it was 3rd brake light. Can you remove the lightbulb from the cluster that it will not annoy anymore? The same with the seatbelt?

everlast 09-06-2007 01:08 PM

Just remove, clean and replace all the lights; it will fix that. Don't remove any bulbs from your console. Get it fixed. Do you want the airbag to actually work if you get in an accident?

You are driving an expensive car. You can't really cheap out on it without the car going to hell.

Thank you everybody, and last question - is there a way to make seat belt light go off after sertain period of time? Annoying...

Quack 09-07-2007 01:29 PM

put on your seatbelt

BAH!

If it doesn't go off with your belt on, maybe the plug under the seat has been disconnected / corroded. Find it, unplug it, clean it and plug it back in. Come to think of it, I think my e39 did that do me once early on.

zmiter 09-08-2007 05:43 PM

no, i actually drive without seatbelt. I need the wire to be disconnected or put a switch on ti dalayeing disconnection.

You must be joking. I guess you've never actually been in a car accident?

zmiter 09-10-2007 12:53 PM

I'm not joking, i've been into car accidents and it is my choice. But it was not the question. From the place I'm from it is not mandatory and I dont remember the light all the time on our cars... so I guess there should be the way...

everlast 09-10-2007 01:24 PM

Actually, its not your choice. The place you're in now, it is mandatory, and its the law. Also, if you understand the law of averages, you'd wear your seat belt. I highly doubt anyone here will assist you in modifying your e39 to not wear your seatbelt.

"Good luck with that."

Wait for your lighting module to break ;)
