D2X vs 5D

I'm looking at getting either a D2X or 5D, as a replacement for my D200. I always had Nikon cameras so I'm not sure if there are any benefits to getting 5D over D2X. I never had any problems with D200 but I'm just curious what some other people on here think..

PS. This is for my hobby, I'm not a pro in any way when it comes to photography, but I always liked nice cameras.

what's the reason for replacing the D200? In all honestly, if I was not a pro, I would not even Touch the D2X, the price is just way too high. I would spend my money on lenses instead.

I'm sure the D300 is also on its way.

Do you have a lot of money invested in nikon glass? if so, dont even bother with the 5d.

Is there a reason why you want to replace the D200? doesn't make much sense if you just want a nice camera since the one you have is pretty nice already. I would suggest you list some of the lenses you have and I can suggest some killer glass for you.

If you still want to upgrade your camera body, i suggest going to a henry's and try it out. Without a doubt, the Nikon pro bodies have the best feel to them.

PS. I have a 5d and its my workhorse, if you ever wish to switch to canon, and money is not an issue, thats the way to go.

I usually use either 18-200mm VR or 24-120mm VR on D200, and I have some telephotos I rarely use. I can go either way, 5D or D2X, since I don't really have a lot of Nikon-only stuff right now.

whiskeym3, so did you ever try/use D2X, how did it compare to 5D?

whiskeym3 12-10-2006 06:16 PM

I'm not sure how the D2x image quality is, but since its nikon's flagship camera, im sure its pretty good. If you compare the ergonomics of the d2x with the 5d the nikon wins, it just feels more solid, and the controls are better in my opinon. I have the 5d and a 1d, and my 5d sometimes feels like a toy compared to the 1d, you have to see if thats something important for you.

Looking at the lenses you have, I would suggest getting the following instead,
17-55 + 70-200VR. Both are superb! Or if youre a prime nut like me, I would suggest getting the 85f1.4, its suppose to be a killer portrait lens. A smarter approach though would be to find out what photography you'd like to do, and get lenses specific to those interest.

If you do go 5d, now is a great time to get it. There is a double rebate from canon, and you can save $700 if you get the 5d and one of the lenses on their rebate list.

Remember though, the camera is just a tool.

sell me your telephotos :)

Redster 12-10-2006 06:48 PM

Hey I might be selling nikkor telephoto AF 105mm lens, but I'm not sure yet. If you're interested let me know and if I decide to sell it I'll PM you.

I think I'll stop by henry's and see how I like 5D, but if it doesn't offer something more than D2X I'll just stick with Nikon and go with D2X

Gamite 12-10-2006 06:50 PM

the 105, isn't it a macro? i've been looking for that.

Gamite 12-10-2006 06:55 PM

Here's some sample photos

D2Xs

5D

In all honesty, I think you could produce similar photo's with the D200.

Redster 12-10-2006 07:11 PM

It's AF Micro-Nikkor F/2.8 VR Lens

I'll go and see which one I like better, D2X or 5D..

That can't be more true.

I'm a Canon guy but unless you are interested in paying many thousands for your lenses, forget the 5D. It's a full frame camera and it will make all but the best glass look like SHIT.

Hehehehe, Primes rule!

The d200 is a fantastic camera as it is so maybe just keep it. Its built like a tank.

if youre going to replace your d200 with the 5d canon just remember that you will lose the weather sealed body of d200 and the d2x to a non-weather sealed body of the canon 5d.

I personally would choose the d2x over the 5d, a more fair comparison would be the d2x against the top of line canon 1ds markii as the d2x is a much higher end body than 5d.

i believe the d2xs is out now which is the newest version so you should see prices dropping for the d2x.
Something to consider that make getting the d2x at a much lower price than could be possibe a few months ago.

1 thing Canon has over Nikon is the ability to handle higher ISO's with less noise which although the NIkon does well with the Canon does so much better.

here's a good thread on the comparison of the 5d and d2x
