E36 Sound System Upgrades

Hi guys,

I feel like its time for a sound system upgrade in my E36 cabriolet.

For the most part, I am happy with the sound... but I feel like it needs bass.

So, here come the questions:

1) can someone tell me how many speakers my car has, where they are all located, and the sizes?

2) I am told our cars have built-in amps for the speakers. please confirm, and reveal location.

So, if I want to simply put a single 10" sub into the car, with the stock system:

3) is that doable?

4) is it recommended?

5) what needs to be done?

I think the stock speakers are good enough, and put out good mids and highs. a sub would complete the sound with good lows.

Please, all you crazy E36 guys - tell me what to do!

bmw's came with 2 trim packaes. either 6 or 10 speakers. im pretty sure both had stock amps in the trunk. i think on the right side of the trunk. check how many speakers u have

1. close to ur feet, 1 and a tweeter on the door, 2 in the back (looks like one since its in the same enclosure) double that and u got 10 - like moi.

the best thing to do i is stick a 10 inch sub in there, thats what im doing when i get back from my vacation, its very doable and very easy. get an amp, get a sub, get some wiring and ur set

If you dont have split down rear seats, the bass your looking for probably wont be as good as you may have thought. Droping the rear armrest, will slightly improve the sound, but because the back of the seats are solid, sound is harder to travel into the passenger compartment. However, fold down seats, allow sound to pass, much more freely.

well I don't have much of a choice, do I?

I can either put a sub in the trunk, or do nothing at all, right?

so... can a single sub be added to the stock sound system, including the stock deck, without having anything to do with the existing system in place, with its amp? I can just add a second amp for the sub, and wire the sub into the stock deck?

I'm mostly concerned with the installation, and how hard/easy it would be to wire up a singel sub to the stock system.

Wire up a single sub with no amp to power that sub? I don't think your amp that powers your speakers or whatever will be capable of powering a sub as well. Pretty sure you will need to buy an amp with ur sub. Just a guess though, but I'm almost positive. Also I would reccomend getting an aftermarket deck if you want to keep your stock speakers. Will make a HUGE difference, and allow you better control of your sub as well as allow you better tuning options...

no, I would obviously get an amp for the sub too. just want to know if I can have both amps running at the same time.

as for an aftermarket deck... I would consider that later. need to find one I like.

i highly suggest getting a new deck, it may be the single best improvement in sound. plus get an mp3 deck that can control the sub. makes life a lot easier. my deck i can turn off the base to the speakers and tell the deck to only send the low signal to the sub...puuurfect

Yea, deck before sub no doubt....

except sub is on big sale at future shop!

I'll grab that tomorrow, and keep it until a deck goes on sale too...

kzy 04-20-2006 01:14 AM

I should grab me one of those too

Do a headunit first. Honestly despite it not being great sound, stock speakers /amp aint that bad. If you want rumbling bass, then yes, grab subs, but if you just want cleaner sound, that's a different story

OK.I add the right way for upgrades.step (1) plan it out on what you what to do,step (2) deck step (3) wires (4) speakers (5) subs+box, sealed or ported or bandpass (6) amps for how many you what or need, and how much power that is needed (6)EQ if needed (7) installing it the right way not the fast way...BUT YOU ALL KNEW THAT RIGHT...hehehehehehehee
