Engine removal. Calling all mechanics.
 
I am removing my engine in preparation for an engine swap and I am stuck. Do I remove the tranny torx-hex bolts that connect the tranny to the engine or do I remove the bolts connecting the tranny to the driveshaft?

Basically, is it better to remove the tranny before the engine is removed or after?

im not a mechanic but ive been through the bentley u have to disconnet the tranny from the driveshaft then the tranny from the engine the engine comes last of of those 3:)

if u are removin it with the tranny then leave the TORX bolts alone and disconnect the driveshaft. but if u lke to separete the tranny from the engine then unbolt those torx screws and pry between the engine/tranny to get them seperated.

thanx guys, but can't i just disconnect the driveshaft from the tranny and disconnect the tranny once I take out the engine. Wich is easier?

you got it right.
it is much easier to pull out the engine + tranny as once piece, same when dropping in the new engine. bolt on the transmission first, and drop it in together.

Yup, if you can get it out in one piece, that is definitly easier. I just took out my tranny yesterday to install a LW flywheel and race clutch, and it was a pita to get at all the torx bolts ... took about 4hrs to get it out (boy I sure wish I had a lift!)

To make your like even easier, remove the whole front end clip (bumper, rad, nose piece, etc.) It only takes about 1 hr to do, and will save you the hassle of trying to tilt the engine up out of the bay.

Once you know where all the bolts are, it isn't hard to pull a tranny out. I installed my new race clutch and tranny with new driveshaft and linkage this week end, it was pretty easy.

Impact tools and super long extension helps a lot.

I would pull the tranny then remove the hood and pull the engine up.

I pulled engine and tranny together when I send my engine to be rebuilt and it was a bit of a pain not to damage anything in the way.

If you have the front end parts removed, sure do it that way, else pull the tranny out then the engine. Either way works. I pulled my tranny out so many times that it is probably easier for me to pull the tranny out 1st.
Once the car is on jack stands, there is plenty of room to acess all the tranny bolts. Only the starter bolts are a pain to install on some cars.

Don't forget that there is a bolt on the passenger side at the back of the tranny holding a shield. (10mm wrench). If you are removing the tranny.

I never really paid attention to the shield between the transmission and the engine, I though it had a purpose somehow.

To lift the engine, I used the engine block opening at the back of the engine (like a big hole on the driver side design to lift the engine) and for the front, I used the BMW special hook that is in the engine also. I didn't have to make anything each time I had to lift a bmw engine.

The hoist was cheap so I bought it along with an engine stand. Very handy.

how much for the hoist and the stand?

dunno how much it is to buy, its around $50 CAD to rent per day. (the hoist that is)
