Laptops: What to buy? Brand? Specs etc

I have never owned a laptop. I have always been a fan of desktops but I now require a laptop for school. I need something simply for word processing and internet. I have a gaming desktop already so I don't require a ridiculous sound and video card (maybe just something decent). So, I ask you, what brands are good out there based on your own experiences. I'm tired of Dell and am thinking about getting an HP or Toshiba from FS or Best Buy.

I do not want a MAC either. I would appreciate some reviews on laptops on the market right now. Thanks.

Want to spend about $1400.

if your budget were a lil higher I would recommend a tablet, excellent for school notes.

my only advice for laptops..

Stick with a Centrino processors.. They have very low power consumption, and the processor speed is always at max speed, when plugged in or on battery..
My dads laptop is a pentium 4 mobile 1.8 GHZ, when running on battery it reduces its speed to 800 mhz, to increase life, but it runs like shit.

try and get ones with decent ram.. and a decent hard drive..

if you want just for word processing and internet.

they got alot of good deals on older laptops, like p3 700 mhz and the such.. These laptopcs are great for internet, word, spreadsheets, msn, and taking notes all around.

otherwise a descent centrino will running you around 1000$ i think but will have a very good performance/battery life. and if you are going mobile, you always want good battery life.

the laptop justin is sellin is actually amazing.

OP. You should evaluate first what your needs are on a laptop?
Will you be carrying this laptop a lot? Or will it be a coffee table queen? (weight matters).

That what I was told by Futureshop, Toshiba's are nice and quality it the best. I was orginally there to buy Sony VGN-S360, but they talked me out of it and told me to get Toshiba. So i got it. Went home and start reading reviews Toshiba vs Sony. Let me tell you, it wasnt looking good for Toshiba. Next day I returned it and picked up Sony.

Best freaking laptop I've ever used.

P.S. Sonny, if you want a very reliable laptop, look no further than Lenovo/IBM. They are simply the best. What Justing is selling is a very good laptop. The only downside IMO, its not widescreen.

obviously you cant compare to a Sony.. I too would take a sony over a toshiba, then again I dont have an extra 10 grand for it.

My roomate had 2 Dells in 2 years. Why? The first one kept overheating and he'd loose his work Ellen Feiss style. He was suckered into buying a second because his dad had some hookup...and guess what...same problem. So...I can't recommend a Dell to anyone. I also have another customer service nightmare story from one of my dad's friends who bought a bunch of Dells for his business. He swears never to buy from there again. So...

Anyways, I got a Sony Vaio FS635 Centrino from Costco. I originally was going to buy the Toshiba Satellite Pentium 4, but I saw a sign saying they they had ran out of Sony FS Pentium 4's and were selling the more expensive Centrino models for the same price. Centrino > P4 for laptops. And for about the same price, the Sony was a no brainer.

Hadn't had a problem with the Sony ever since I got it and highly recommend it. They also look the best too.

10g??? Where did you see them anything over 3g??

Anyway, I told you my story. WHen I told them to get Sony, they told me to stay the **** away. They are shit and most of them are getting returned.
And Toshiba has the best built quality out of any of them.

According to reviews all over the internet, it was other way around

sirex 01-16-2006 07:49 PM

dude im exagerating.. but sony's are awlays pricier then anything else around.

Check out the IBM Thinkpads with Centrino, I picked up 2 of them from Deep and I can tell you it was a great combination of quality of the laptops and support. These laptops come with an embedded security chip which is hardware based so it keeps your passwords locked and the Recovery and Restore system in it is one of the best. Try getting that stuff from crappy Dell.

Excellent keyboard and build quality and getting this through great guy like Deep made my decision too easy.
