Change your coolant every two years...

I keep telling people about it, and now I have to do two headgasket jobs on two 535i.

The heagasket was damaged around cylinder #6 (as always).
The water passages holes were cracked on the headgasket (I will take a picture).

And on the 535i you also have to check that the oil spray bar bolts are tight and not loose (or gone). The camshaft will be damaged anb will need to be replaced: around 410 Cdn or so.

Just my 0.02c.

u have a pic of the oil spray bolts?

I Should have taken picture of the head before it is being rebuilt.

Bruno, what is your coolant recommendation? Brand?

Gamite 03-01-2005 02:06 PM

Bruno always recommends BMW coolant.. :P

Thanks for the pic, bruno, I'll check it out next time I tighten my valves.

I am a strong believer when it come to OEM coolant.
trust me the crap that I flush out the coolant. man is nasty.
you might pay a little extra more for oem coolant. but in the long run it save you from head gasket.

Just bought 20 jugs of BMW coolant, I always use BMW coolant mixed 50%- 50% with distilled water.

Considering that you change your coolant every two years (the same applies to brake fluid, every 6 month if you go to the track). The extra cost of using BMW coolant is really minor, compaired to 1300 Cdn you will pay for a head rebuilt and headgasket replacement.

Has the price come down; I think it hit something like 40 bucks a jug?

Bruno 03-02-2005 10:10 AM

It is cheaper than that... I think they had a mistake in their computers for awhile. And the guy told me that it was because the price of the coolant went up... YEah right, like if it was traded on the stock market.

Should be around 23 - 25 Cdn or so / jugs. Gotta love that blue stuff.

ChahalzBMR 03-02-2005 10:16 AM

^ that's actually a pretty good price.

Slowered318 03-02-2005 10:38 AM

I agree.. BMW coolant is the only way to go!

blue is best!

myndgone 03-02-2005 11:28 AM

just bought a jug 2 days ago...$22+tax.

BMW recommends rad flush every year, and brake every 2. Small price to pay for engine longevity.
