135i started up like a champ at -25, not even a long crank.

I put this on my 325 a couple winters ago. Works great! Better than a block heater.

Block heaters are always optional in this part of Canada... you sometimes find them as a "dealer installed standard option" in Man. and other western prov. but generally not here unless it's a diesel and even then not always anymore...
Pad type heaters as posted by jabela above are excellent options often used on aircraft engines... however mounting surface must be completely clean and free of rust, loose paint etc. to ensure a complete, solid seal... be careful to attach the plug wire securely and away from moving parts...

It's not so much that I need a block heater. Due to my wife not driving it very far to work, the battery does not charge.
So on cold days the starter turns over very slowly untill she catches.
I think a block heater would get it going a bit quicker.

I will look into the above external heater. That's a great idea.

Here in Missisauga it was down to -21 degrees the other day.

The main reason I got the oil pan heater was to prevent common CCV failures that are going to happen at some point, especially if you have short drives in the winter. It basically goos up your CCV system and you either get a vacuum leak, or you suck oil into the engine and you hydrolock it. Google it if you want to scare yourself.

The other benefits of running an oil pan heater is that your oil is nice and warm so less wear on the engine at startup, plus your car warms up quicker so you have heat out of your vents sooner.

The downside is you have to plug it in to work, but I have it on a timer so it only comes on in the morning an hour before I leave for work.

Aren't you using synthetic oil? Synthetic doesn't get (as) thick the way dino oil would from cold temp.

Yea, I do, but it's still nice to have heat from your car quickly. Again, the main reason is the whole CCV issue, which happens on cars even if they're running synthetic.

You should've seen my face when I tried installing a magnetic oil pan heater.. and then realized my oil pan was aluminum once the car was on jack stands *shiner* fcplm

If it's the short drive to work not charging the battery being the main issue you'd be better off getting a small 2A "battery maintainer" charger from CanTire... it will keep the batt. charged up and be more helpful over the long run then the block heater since constantly being under charged will kill the batt. faster then a few cold starts will hurt the engine...

Also check your battery to make sure that the cells are full of distilled water.
