Turbo or Supercharger

Looking to do some engine upgrades to my '01 325i. Can anyone tell me whether a turbo or supercharger is the better option. Also, besides just slapping that on what else would i need to change in my engine? Is a new computer also required? And could anyone suggest a good place to order these things?

Sorry about the noob questions but i'm not a mechanic but def have an idea of what i wanna do, and want to learn. Thanks!!!

A properly set up supercharger will cost more than what your car is worth. If you purchase a used kit, you're only adding risk to your pocket, and the software tune will cost you upwards of $800 at minimum.

The 325 is not a good platform to get power out of at all. If you had a 330, I would be more open minded. If you absolutely must look further into this, the only two supercharger kits I would recommend are by Active Autowerke and ESS Tuning (twin-scroll).

There are no commercially available turbo kits that I know of, other than Technique Tuning. Even on their website, the tunes and advertised kits are for 330's and above. You're venturing into custom work with a turbo.

In that case, what sort performance upgrades would you suggest for my car?

Just do suspension brakes and tires. This will make your car much more enjoyable to drive.

A 3.0 motor swap or just buying a 330 will be more economically viable with better results-- I think that's what he was getting at.

You can make a 2.5L E46 handle well,
and look pretty - but not fast by any means.

Coilovers, wheels, 3.38 diff (assuming its manual). Those are your best bets to get the most out of it without spending more than what the car is worth.

And you can go with a couple bolt-on's! Just to make your car sound faster *wiggle*

I suggest maintaining the car, particularly:
Its difficult to stress how important it is to be on top of maintenance. I've driven identical models of cars which the only difference was the owner and the way those vehicles were maintained. The difference was from the sky to the ground.

If you'd like a little more noticeable exhaust note, and a slight increase in power, consider headers. As people have said though, a decent suspension setup can make a world of difference. Its not a fast car, but it is exceptionally well balanced and can be made to handle like its on rails.
