e39 540 2000

Hi everybody ! I am not very good with Bmw ... I plan to buy a 2000 540 ...http://montreal.kijiji.ca/c-autos-et...AdIdZ490197823

What do you think of it ?
What the problem of the 540 ?
What I should inspect ?

The car will be inspected by a Bmw dealer for sure

How can I know if a M package is a real or the pieces have been added in future ??

Thank you for your help !!

Expensive.

You can get an M5 with less miles for less coin (and it hasn't been modified all to hell):

http://wwwa.autotrader.ca/a/BMW/M/PO...howcpo=ShowCPO

(assuming that's a real M5 of course. There aren't any interior shots or rear shots that show the exhaust....)

There's also this 2002:

Yeah...not an M5 by far! Not even an M-package. Most likely a 540i sport and someone added a few things to it (like the M5 rims and mirrors). But the bumpers and moldings give it away.*wave*

Yeah, I thought the lack of a rear shot, engine bay shot...etc were relatively suspicious, LOL!

The 2nd link though is definitely legit. A bit more coin though...

Here's an '01 in the GTA for 15:

A 2000 for $11 (but God are those headlights HIDEOUS!!):

You forget the premium in repairs, maintenance and insurance that accompanies a M5. That is why many people choose to go with the 540i, it seems like they are saving some cash.

Yeah - that definitely sounds too expensive. In January I sold my 2003 540i sport with aftermarket M5 bumpers, a second set of tires+rims and with 50K less kms for noticeably less than that. Mine didn't have the Dinan upgrades, but I don't think that even comes close to making it worth what they're asking.

I'd also suggest you keep looking...

Thank you guys for the M5 link .... But I don't want to buy an M5 .. Too expensive .... I changed of career and I nees a clean car, powerful, funny, rwd, 4 seasons .... At 11 000$ Maximum !

I am from quebec city and if you know some clean and well maintened 540i at good price ( I prefer 02-03, but up 2000 can be ok ) not too far of me .... Let me know...... And what are the bad and the positive of the 540 ? .... Standart one please !

I haven't found my M5 to be expensive to own or maintain

The most expensive repair at this point was the clutch job, which is of course an item one should plan on getting done at the mileage mine needed it (and I'm sure yours did too, as per our recent discussion, no?)

Insurance is also extremely reasonable. It costs less for full coverage than my Expedition.

I guess I get hung up on the tarting up of a 540i to make it look/trick people into thinking it is an M5. If somebody wants an M5, buying a modded-out 540i doesn't get you there. Since the car the OP linked (not to mention the price of it!) seemed to be pointing in that direction, I figured linking him to some real ones for not a lot more was a logical move.

If you don't want an M5, then you don't want a tarted-up 540i either, especially one that is insanely over-priced, LOL! *wiggle*

The M62 has been known for timing chain guide failures (look for a recent thread as to the excitement of THAT job!) and is in general more difficult to work on than the I6 cars.

Engine work on the 540i is going to be more expensive than on a 530i for example. And that of course is relative to whether you can spin a wrench or if you have others do that work for you.

And in that vein, there are E39-specific issues like control arm bushings, subframe bushings and other suspension-related wear items that are common problem points from the M5 right on down through the rest of the line-up. So you need to remember to budget for the wear and tear items, regardless of what car you end up with.

Here's one that might be worth checking out (though it is priced a little low..... maybe a scam):
