New To E30s, Have a question about this thing(PIC)
hey guys,

Scored this e30 for cheap but it isnt running right.

anyways did a compression test turned out good
the thing bogs and runs like shit when the ICV hose is plugged into the intake elbow.

tested : wires,ICV were both in spec

new plugs and this thng is running pig rich but leans out a bit when i pull the ICV hose out

anyways this little thing on the airbox? what is it?
it was taped up and shit when i bought it with just some wires going into it.

is there a vacuum line that goes into the AFM?

what is the purpose of this relay thingy? does it do anything with idle or fuel circuits?

Thanks in advance.

318 or 325? I don't recognize that from an m20

BmW1819 05-17-2013 08:43 PM

Thats just the sensor for altitude

slammedcoupe 05-18-2013 08:53 AM

thank you bmw1819

its a 325e . so that has no effect on anythin then?

any vacuum lines attached? or just the electrical wires?

when I have the ICV hose unplugged it runs ok (see picture)

when its plugged in the intake elbow, it stutters and runs like crap.

if I plug the ICV hose with my finger it dies

when I plug the hole on the intake elbow and rev it stutters

if I unplug the AFM it dies

any insight?

Is the hose clogged?

slammedcoupe 05-18-2013 12:00 PM

I never thought to actually check that, is it supposed to be sucking like crazy?

TSI 05-18-2013 11:50 PM

Not really like crazy, but if it's hard to the touch and you can wipe sludge off the inside, replacing it will definitely help.

Next step would be to check that the plug wires are on the right plugs (sometimes the wires are switched by cheap POs. My gf's cab is 1-3-6-4-5-2, for example)

slammedcoupe 05-19-2013 10:42 AM

is that the correct firing order? 1-3-6-4-5-2?

ill have to double check as I thought I found the correct firing order but wasn't 100%

thanks for the help so far.

and the ICV hose sounds like its sucking in all the air to run the engine, once its plugged into the boot it bogs and is like there is a restriction. but there isn't a restriction?
unless the AFM door wont move enough for idle ? but it does move by hand

TSI 05-19-2013 11:31 AM

No, no, it has nothing to do with firing order, it's just the numbers printed on the spark plug wires, which are supposed to be 123456 but are messed up on her car :)

Come to think of it, that won't be your problem though, as it runs fine with the hose unplugged. Maybe I should think more before posting after work...

Did you check all the vacuum hoses? I'm not too famililar with the eta motor, but on the b25 they often cause this kind of problem. Smoke test would be best.

InfiniteDice 05-19-2013 08:26 PM

That is usually hooked to the air filter box. I believe it's an air pressure sensor so if you change elevations it allows the car to run properly.

I do not know m20 too well, but in m42 there is a shit tot of vacuum lines, when i got my car all vacuum hoses were not hooked up to the rights places, this made car run like crap until I got it sorted out.

how about checking to see if the dip stick is pushed all the way down? also check the o-rings as they wear. If you don't get proper crank case pressure you will get rough idle and running. sounds to me like a vacuum issue somewhere.

BmW1819 05-19-2013 10:28 PM

Yea only the 325 had the sensor disconnected will run a bit more rich no biggy.
I would pull that hose from the valve cover they like to build up there

slammedcoupe 05-20-2013 09:47 AM

ok, i will check out this stuff after work today!

thanks for the input guys, i will report back after i check some more crap
