Got a little rubbing... any advice?
I'm not going to repeat my thread, I posted in the tires and wheels section, but no one seems to be answering me,... Maybe if I get E30 owners attention that might help :)

so here's a link to the thread...

The OD of the tire and wheel combo you are using is a good couple inches taller than stock. Coupled with the effective 0 offset of the modified wheels I am not surprised you are rubbing.

If you are dead set on using those wheels you modified then really your only course of action is to get lower profile tires.

as mentioned lower the profile of the tires and or maybe roll the fenders if you have too. it's tricky when you lower a car because you don't know how accurate the lowering will be. Something one should do is investigate and get the right dimensions in order to pick the right set up.

lots of guys take the inner fender liners out. that will take take of that.

I just bought the exact same wheels myself and am currently figuring out how to fit them as well. I ran with a 10mm spacer front and back with no issues but there was way too much poke for me. I left the 10mm on the back and put a 5mm on the front as I heard this works for most people. There was grinding though and now I'm looking to grab and angle grinder and take off the smallest bit off the caliper edge. I'm planning to do this within the next few days; I'll be sure to pass on my results!

Im not sure why you welded a spacer to the wheel just to have the correct CB. Anyways if your rubbing on the back of the fender liner in the front your not going to be able to fix this with changing the final offset. Your pretty much dicked for the front using such a large tire.

Since you have an early model the rear arches have a larger radius and fit larger tires with ease. You must have some pretty soggy springs in the rear. That is alot of travel as it looks like your rubbing past half on the sidewall. You can roll the rear fender lip in which gives you a good amount of clearance and then at least if you contact the fender it wont be a sharp edge going into the sidewall.

IMO I would go down to a 40 or 45 series sidewall.

Not my favorite, but as as last resort, you can always do a little tire stretch. This will make sidewall to incline inwards, thous creating the extra space to clear tire and wheel well...also this would kind of hide the poke, as the tire itself will be less wide.

20mm spacers was not a very good idea.

Oh, yeah, for the extra cost you can probably shave off 5-10mm of that spacer, but this depends on the depth of the newly drilled holes.

He changed the bolt pattern. Not just the CB.

Yeah, the welded idea came in cause I was re-drilling the bolt pattern, and wanted a little more structural integrity,...

So... should I do something like ET10 in the back and ET5 in the front? or still too agressive? it still needs to clear the brake caliper in the front somehow...

I may just need the roll the front a bit... but yeah, as far as rubbing on the inside... I'll need a thinner tire...

Its driveable the way it is now... I just can't back out of my driveway and turn my wheel full lock... funny driving forward and turning the wheel full lock does not rub?! a little puzzled about that...

Also, anyone know what the spring rate is the for H&R Sports? Maybe the rears are a bit too soft... then again, this is meant to be a street car, I don't want it slammed, I like the ride height the way it is now, I think it suites the car very well...

You should be able fix the problem with any combination of the following, in order of my favorite to least:
Reduce tire aspect ratio
Roll fenders
Reduce wheel offset
Reduce tire width

In the front I would remove the fender liner as it looks like that what you are rubbing on.

I'm thinking roll the fronts and reduce the offset in the back...

next set of tires, go with a thinner sidewall...

Just not sure what kind of handling characteristics to expect if I go with a different offset in the rear than the front...

Also, rubbing in the front is actually rubbing on the inside wheel arch, not the liner... I was thinking of going under there and give it a few "love taps" with the sledge hammer :) nothing back there but the inside of the passenger compartment... probably won't even notice it behind the carpet :)

Hm not sure why they're rubbing at stock height with the early models wider arches..
My old rim specs (Farintosh's new rims) are 16x8 et23 with 10mm spacers in the front, they were mounted on a late model lowered on eibachs+bilsteins with flares and 205/45 tires with no rubbing issues. They may or may not be the mentioned set you guys were re-engineering.

Even with shot stock suspension they didn't rub. I'd say increase the offset a little if possible and lower your tire profile to 40 or 45 and see how it works out.
