Hey guys! i have a couple parts car that i neeeeeeeeed to do something with :P i have my 94' 540i, and my 91' 520i. my plan is to use the m50b20 motor for a complete overhaul to install into my 90' Turbo 520i, the body of the 540 is to rough, holes in the body and trunk trunk lid, rockers and doors, while the 520i is in better condition with some rust on the fenders and a lil on the doors :) i could also repair the body of the 540 with the body of the 520i... not sure exactly wat i wanna do sooo please comment!

Nice looking cars! I would strongly suggest investing your time into the better condition, less rust option.

As for track-ready, I think it really depends on your goals. Unless you're going for an all-out rollcaged dedicated track car build, really any car in good mechanical shape with maintenance kept very up to date will be fine to use for some autoslalom or HPDE days. I would say focus on making a plan to have a very reliable car with wear items replaced in excellent mechanical condition, and then track use shouldn't be an issue.

Key words: make a plan *th-up* :D

im not doooing the all out racing just yet lol, i first want to get comfortable in my car and understand the rules of the track, i wanna be safe before i do anythng intense :P

my goal is to make the car reliable, and to lighten the car up as much as possible, i plan on takin out all the stuff i wont use like a/c, stereo, rear seats, truck lining, heater, rear door panels and stuff like that :P i dont plan on havin ths car done till next summer soooooo time i have a lot of, money is what i dont have :P

i forgot to mention that i love the idea of having a slick top 540, the 520i i have is an import from italy and its the first slick top e34 ive ever seen in person, and without the sunroof i think the weight would be a tad lighter in the slick

i was talking to a couple people about tracking an e34 and well tho it is a great car, there are smaller cars like the e30 that will be able to handle the corners with far less modification, and with that giant v8 up front, it might become very tail happy, soooo it dawned on me..... DRIFT CAR BUILD?, anyone have any experience with the regualtions of what a drift car neeeds other then power and a damn GOOOD e-brake?

my 540i already has the lsd and the power sooo it might be fun to do that....

comments? :)

DAMN. This is very cool. Swapping the M60 into the 520i seems to be the way to go. There's been a couple drift builds for E34's, some 540i's too.

both ideas sound FUN and are fun.. main thing is to make sure your car is mechanically sound before starting any of these hobbies. i do a couple track days myself and there isnt much too it. get a helmet tires and make sure everything is running fine( brakes, fluids, tires, and do a quick suspension check). and yes you're car is a bit heavy for the track but before starting a serious track build attend a couple track events and see how they are. if your car is safe to beat it on the track try out tracking your car as is and see how you like it. me and a few friends will be going to multiple track events this year and you are more then welcome to tag along.

Now for drifting me and my buddy go to drift events and change tires all day at shannonville and let me tell you from my point of view that it is a very exspensive hobby since you run through tires in like 2-4 laps. we are going up May 20th for another event if you want to come down and check out the event and talk to the guys there that drift their cars. cars are constantly breaking and need re[airs after every event. check out son240sx.org they have a big drift community there.

hope some of my input kind of helps

Kinda helps?!, that a lot of goood info uve givin, i know drifting is fairly expensive, and very hard on ur car, but its part of the fun right? :P,

Sooo i think ive decieded..... drift build.... this project it gunna go very slow haha but i will attempt to document it with pocs and descriptions as best as possible :)

this needs repeating.

make it safe before you make it go fast into dorifto cornering.

captain E34 05-08-2013 09:03 AM

Yes, i totally understand that, i will be dooing the swap into the less rusty car!

I might have to live at my uncles place in manotick cuz he has a large garage which i would love to have both e34s in to do the swap of parrrrts :P

buzzdmonkey 05-08-2013 09:18 PM

driiiiiiiiiifttttt. Well heres my advice, sinse s13's (240sx) are my fav car (dont kill me) and they are reeaallllyy common for drifting i know a liiiitttlle bit about a setup. lsd for sure , or be really cheap and weld your diff but then have fun parking/on ramps/any turn really. '

make sure your tranny can take a good beating (LOL) and get a pretty good clutch. stiffen up the rear and leave the basket weaves on since tires are cheap for them xD.

hmm what else. OH YEAH check out the driftworks forum. theres probably a few e34 builds over there that might have some good tips. A nice hydraulic e-brake would be nice but if youve got the power then you probably wont need the e brake that ofter. hmm and well i guess strut bars would help with stiffness. Theres my 2 cents

captain E34 05-08-2013 11:28 PM

I understand that the car has to take a beating lol, lsd is of course needed, im goooing to slowly pick away at the 540 and start pullin stuff apart :) interior is first!!

Buzzedmonkey, u wanna do that black/beige interior in ur e34 :)

buzzdmonkey 05-08-2013 11:31 PM

Yay for beige interior pieces :)

captain E34 05-09-2013 11:49 PM

captain E34 05-21-2013 05:53 PM

captain E34 06-04-2013 10:40 PM
