schrick camshaft opinions?
 
Hi,

I have seen 272 cam regrinds on bimmerforum... $250.00. Any difference from a 272 cam schrick?
I'm just wondering because:
regrind $250
schrick: near $500
big difference in the price. What's the actual difference?

The duration might be 272 but the actual cam profile could be different depending on what cam they are copying. Also, you may need to use oversized eccentric adjusters in the rockers to be able to properly adjust the valves.

It 274, it not 272. I have wrong.

Someone actually asks him in that thread if they are needed and he says only 1 person out of 30 or so has needed them.

Reground cams are typically made by building up the lobe peak by welding and then regrinding it to the desired profile. During regrinding the whole lobe will be ground, including the side of the lobe where the valve is closed. That side of the lobe did not have any extra material added, so in order to set the valves you will need to adjust the eccentric farther than you would typically have to. Sometimes the stock valve eccentric might not have enough adjustment to set the valves properly so you have to install an eccentric that is oversized in order to compensate.

Well it all depends on the process the shop doing the regrinds uses. If after they build up the lobes they heat treat the cam to get it back to the same spec hardness that an OEM cam has, then it will be just as solid, but for $250 I doubt they are heat treating the cams after welding them. However the core of the lobe being a bit softer is only really an issue for high lift cams that will be seeing high spring pressures. For a cam like a 272 or 274 it's likely not an issue. I haven't heard of any of myster-e regrind cams failing so they must be doing a good job on the regrinds.
