Obd2 scan for true mileage?

My friend is considering buying a Benz or bmw and he has two perspective cars, running a obd2 scanner on either (2002 3 series and a 99 e class) could I ascertain the true kilometers even if the odometer had been replaced?

Any help is great cause the regular google search found null.

Not entirely sure about the OBD2 system, but afaik mileage is simply a gear from drivetrain to odometer and is not related to engine electronics.

a gear from drivetrain to odometer? lol, definitely not.

and the answer is no. The ECU does contain the mileage, but anyone who has enough skill to replace a cluster can also fake the mileage in the ECU.

People who reprogram mileage on cars can do it so well that the dealer cannot tell its been done (so you can return over-mileage lease cars without penalty)

Carfax/Carproof will show you the reported mileage history, based on when the car was brought into the Driveclean check or was sold. If the mileage is less than any of those, then you know there's an issue.

That is only true if it was brought to a "higher end" facility like Canadian tire, or green and ross.
If you go to joe's garage, forget about any mileage making it into the database.

Maybe in your 88, otherwise this is completely false.
