engagement rings? good places?

*par-t*
hey guys, slowly starting to look for engagement rings.
looking to spend 6-8k.
don't mind spending the 8 either
looking around a 1 carat.

how were your experiences? places to go?
learning the 5 C's of diamonds.
cut clarity color certification and carat

the first 3 seem to pop up the most during conversations.

thanks in advance.

I picked up an engagement ring recently (March 2012) from a place that was recommended to me by another member of this forum.

Its a referral only place, for private parties, that sells wholesale to the jewellery stores throughout Canada. Its Corona Jewelers; pm me if you wish to check it out and I can provide you with contact info. Trying to call the line available through google will just make you frustrated as they almost never pick it up.

What kind of deals? Well I got a ring with the following specs;

Center stone;
- 0.8 carat weight
- VVS1 (very, very slight inclusions, looks almost perfect even under jeweler scope)
- E colour (Colourless)
- Excellent cut

Side stones;
-0.25 cr wt each
-VVS1/VVS2
- G colour
- Excellent/Very Good

In addition to these three stones the band has a total of 24 stones in a pave setting. The ring is appraised at 30K but the purchase price was just over 5K tax in. I went looking in the retail space as well but similar rings were selling in the 10 to 20K range. I did not spend any less than I intended but I was ecstatic to get way more for the money.

You do get to inspect and pick the exact stone(s) and the setting and if they don't have any you like you can try again later. The inventory turns over almost weekly.

Pic attached.

those are some pretty impressive diamonds for that price.
it is easily 10-20k in retail. appraise 30k for sure.

what's the general rule for amount to be spent on a engagement ring, i hear it's like 3 1/2 month's pay, or generally do most people just do whatever to be spent on?

Depends on your girl. Some girls are all about the bling, some aren't.

Very true...

When it comes to dimonds... After a certain point you cannot tell the diff from a $1000 stone to a $5000 stone that are the same size and cut.

Just look at getting a ring as modding your car. Research the hell out of it before you by it and get at least 3 quotes

I got my rings here

I got an H colour 1.0 carat princess cut diamond, VS1, top grade cut with a custom setting for about $5500 from Diamonds for Less in downtown Toronto. We came back and got a matching custom ring (no stones) for her wedding band as well.

If possible, I highly recommend getting her to come with you to choose the stone and setting - my wife absolutely loves her ring, and I know I never would have picked a ring she'd like as much as this one!

I have a Verragio 0381 Mount in Platinum with .29 or something similar carats on it brand new that I'm willing to let go for 3.5k.

See Deep. He's really easy to deal with and will walk you through it. Got my wife's band and ring from him.
