Replacing main bearings in car
Is this possible to do ?
Can you get them out and back in from the bottom without removing the crank ? Dave |
No. You might be able to do it from below without removing the engine from the car, but the crank has to move as the bearings are on the top and bottom sides of it.
Take your time and do it right or get another bottom end/whole engine and swap. |
You could probably rig something up to manage it but by the time you're done, I'm sure you'll wish you hadn't. It'll be 10x easier to pull the motor and do it on a stand.

hmmm.... ok, thanks

It can be done. The bearings can be "rotated" into place, but I would never do it. Why do you think you need new mains, and if so, likely your crank needs to be polished anyway. Rod bearings can be done from below no problem.

yes, have had that done on my m42; you just have to be ultra careful you seat the bearing properly.

The porsche is out of the question due to the ridiculously high cost of parts and engine work as I found out. Dave |
