Shorter crank times
Hi all,

New member here. I got an awesome 1998 323is in excellent condition about ten days ago. Relatively low mileage for a car of its age (150,000 kms) and the engine responds very well! I have service records for the last 3 years, and it seems like the previous owner was very conscientious about servicing at BMW. Right now, the car needs rear brakes (pads/rotors) and an oil change, and thats about it.

My question is about the crank time. In the morning when I first start the car, the crank sounds fine and the engine starts normally. The strange thing is that as the day goes by, the length of time the car takes to crank becomes progressively shorter with each start. (Engine starts fine each time).

Any ideas why the crank time would be getting shorter through the day? The next day, the crank time is normal again.

its because the engine is still warm when you start it for a second and third time during the day as to in the morning after its been sitting all night

Coincidence. Start time is based upon when the cam and crank sensor reach TDC in cyl #1. So depending on where your motor stops when you turn it off affects how many cranks it takes for it to find TDC again.
