2nd place CSCS Mosport DDT...in a Porsche.
 

Last year we decided to enter Mike's E36/S54 into the CSCS time attack event at Mosport DDT. We never received tires in time and ended up running a horribly mismatched set of street rubber (Dunlop Z1 SS front, Falken FK452 rear...yuck) on two different sets of wheels. Oversteer was ridiculous and I spent most of the day chasing the tail of the car. Somehow we landed a final time quick enough for an easy win:

This winter, a friend of ours casually proposed the idea of taking his 996 GT3 Porsche out and going for another win. Who are we to argue with such an idea?

Unfortunately, CSCS classification bumps his car into the Super Street class where R-compound tires are allowed. The GT3 owner didn't have a set of R-comps and we all agreed it would be a waste of $2k to buy a set just for one day. So we entered with Michelin PS2 street tires and the intention (wish?) of outdriving the class.

The plan almost worked. Throughout the day we were stuck in fourth place behind cars with stickier tires and more power than the 380 the N/A Porsche puts out. Still, we made adjustments and kept finding another few tenths per each 20min practice/qualifying session. We felt good about our chances.

Then the rain started. We were thrilled with this. Our Michelins, while easily giving up 1.5-2 seconds per lap to the R-compounds in the dry, would be much more competitive in the wet. Sadly, the sun came out and by the time the top qualifiers were starting their timed runs the track was bone-dry. Damn.

Odds against us, we staged for 3 timed laps. We edged out the previous 2nd and 3rd place qualifiers (modified and R-comp wearing widebody FD RX-7 and E90 M3, respectively) by just enough for 2nd place. Full timing info: http://livetiming.net/cscs/

We finished 2nd in class, 10th overall, and 2.6 seconds ahead of the next fastest car on street tires. *th-up*

Good drive dude, congrats on the podium! I was watching live timing for most of the duration of the TA. What was the winning car in your class?

I have no problem with CSCS but it must be a record, flipping 2 cars within a year without going off the track. Insert VTEC joke.

Thanks man! Winner was a stripped 370Z with aero and 265 R888s all around. Excellent driver too, obviously. His times were barely under the unlimited cars.

I had enough opposite-lock heart-stoppers to make me wonder if it was a good idea myself. Learning to drive a rear-engine car during a competitive event was interesting to say the least.

Should have come up! The rain mostly missed Mosport.

What's wild is that I didn't even hear about that until the day was over. I was in the staging area waiting for my run and had zero clue that was going on a few hundred feet away. They cleaned it up FAST.

What happened on the 2nd or 3rd lap where it looked like you shut it down out of turn 1 until mid straight? Was it a flag issue? I noticed it caused the guy in the RX-7 to catch up and get stuck. He seemed super pissed off afterwards lol

Combination of things. The time attack grouping was good in concept this year, where they just sorted everyone by qualifying times and put out groups of five. Well for some reason an RSX that qualified way, way slower than our group was allowed out with our pack. He must have missed his group's session and they permitted him to jump into ours. In staging I could hear the guy warning the marshal that he didn't want to get in anybody's way but the CSCS staff told him don't worry about it. So, we had a relatively slow sixth car in the group instead of five near-identical cars.

I caught him on my second timed lap. I waited a long, long time to get some space so I could have a chance of another clean air lap. Then on my next attempt, after letting him go about 1/4 of the way around the track ahead, I caught him AGAIN. Then the RX-7 caught up to me as a result, and he just did not get the concept of waiting for space. In the end my final timed lap was my quickest but I made two big errors as a result of the RX-7 poking his nose inside of me in a few braking zones. I pleaded my case after I returned to the paddock but they wouldn't let me back out. Because I caught the RSX in the back straight and waited there, the marshals at the pit straight didn't notice that I had to sacrifice another lap time because of the slow traffic. My best lap of the day in practice was within a few tenths of the winning 370Z's final time and I truly feel I had a chance of beating him.

TL;DR: Slow car allowed out in wrong group, Porsche got cock blocked, CSCS didn't care.

Come out to an OTA time-attack event and that won't happen! Having said that, I still plan on doing a CSCS event as I like supporting ALL series whenever I can! *rockout*
