e46 328i Clutch Problems

The problem happens only sometimes... while i am releasing the clutch it jutters the car kind of like its going to stall.... there is a wierd sound also with it. I believe the clutch is still original with 210k on the car. Does anyone have a idea of what the problem may be.. it doesnt always happen probably 1/5 times im putting it into first, the rest of the gears are fine.

After driving further i have found that the problem exists when i start off in reverse, there is a loud rattling sound while engaging the gear

Thank You

it happens to me too when the car is cold. Just rev to 1500 and relese clutch, no more clatter.
It sounds like a huge vibrator in the back.

it happened when the engine was hot to though... im thinking its just some sort of engine mount since the clutch is grabbing the gears fine everywhere past 1st... but thanks im going to try that out and see

Did you figure out what this was?
With just 2 posts I doubt we will ever see this guy again.

I've read it about it, and it is a non urgent issue on some e46 cars. The cause is not confirmed, but it could be hot spots on flywheel or uneven surface on the clutch disk or pressure plate. Who knows, it not going to cause more issues than what it is now.

There are 2 major known issues with the E46 manual:

1) Clunking when putting in gear/pushing in clutch pedal
- Causes are usually failing CSB and/or Differential Bushings

2) Clutch chatter, especially in 1st gear when taking off
- Cause 1 is worn springs causing play in the Dual-Mass Flywheel
- Cause 2, which is related to above, would be hotspots on the flywheel.

I've had both of these issues intermittently for 3 years without any real troubles.
