Check engine light on e90

My buddy's e90 suddently had his CEL come on after driving it this morning. The engine sounds rough at idle and seems to go away if I increase the RPM. I hooked up my OBC-II diagnostic tool to see what code would come up and nothing shows.

Is there a newer version of the OBC for 2007+? Unless it's some other engine fault that the OBC scanner cannot see and requiring a visit to the dealer or indy.

Any ideas?

I admit I don't know too much about OBD or the more technical parts of the engine but it might be worth checking the air filter and MAF sensor especially if he's running a K&N w/charcoal delete. It might not be the MAF sensor since you got no codes but if you're checking the air filter anyway you may as well. Another suggestion is to PM Jon @ Bimmersport or one of the RMP guys to see if they have any suggestions.

He's going to change the spark plugs first to see if it makes a difference then try a coil. Failing that it's a visit to Rocco tomorrow.

Cool. I'd be interested to know what it ends up being so I know what to test if it ever happens to me.

Confirm that your code reader is "seated" properly in the port. Could be a faulty sensor within the system somewhere (radiator etc).
Sounds like a proper($better$) code reader and indy is in order...
(coils, O2 sensors, MAF would be picked up by the basic code reader...)

Please let us know what the mystery is!!
