A little problem of flickering/blinking Xenon lights (both at the same time)...

Hi all,

I was wondering if any of you have experienced or heard of my problem. When the temperature drops to 0c or so (it started happening last winter but resolved itself in the spring and summer), I occasionally get a split second where both my Xenon lights would blink out. It's not a loose connection, it doesn't do it when the car gets bumped, it happens even when I'm parked and standing still. Is there a central ballast for both lights? (since both blink at the same time) could it be the ballast is worn and old and doesn't have enough capacity? It's quite annoying, but I don't want to change out the whole Xenon lighting system.

Thanks.

My guess is that it's a Light control modul (LCM). Quite common issue on the E46.

Are LCMs expensive? Is it a DIYs or do I have to take it in?

ive had this happen from time to time. and sometimes my driver side light goes out and i turn the lights off and on again and its all good. my answer, JUST DRIVE THE DAMN THING. its a big piece of metal on wheels that you must constantly pay to maintain. if you wanted to fix every tiny little thing than you'd be broke by the end. save up your $$ for more important safety related issues.

Actually after some more researching, its a weak alternator that is about to go - not supplying enough voltage. Its a good thing too or it could of left me stranded somewhere.

Had the alternator replaced and the problem has gone away now (it was both lights blinking that gave away it was a problem further upstream than the lights).
