Crazy amount of shifter play. Any advice?
 

This summer I had a UUC Evo3 SSK installed in my car. The kit was a noticeable improvement over the stock shifter, but there was still far too much play then I think is acceptable. And I still can't manage to lower the shift height, despite how much liquid wrench I squirt in the little hole on the shaft.

Here are a couple of videos of how much play I have. I tried to get as close as i can to the part I see moving around and what I think is the problem.

Any ideas on what I can do to resolve this?

The problem looks like its in your linkage. You dont have the DSSR, do you?

Everything else looks solid. Whats the play like in the lower shift leaver bushing?

Was this kit new or used?

I have the DSSR, To my knowledge, all the bushings was replaced. not sure about the bushing, shouldn't be loose, but i haven't had a chance to go under the car yet. It was new.

did you put the little yellow shims in?

I didnt do the install myself, but to my knowledge all parts were installed. Duss did the work.

Do all bolts and shims come in the UUC kit? If not make sure the ID and OD of the bolds and holes all match.

Its a long shot, but it could be a worn gearshift rod joint.

As far as I know it comes with almost everything. When I spoke to Terry today she said when it comes to replacing the shifter linkage they replace all the bushings. I had a feeling that might be where the problem is too, everything else looks nice and tight.

sorry not to thread jack, but I have the exact same problem but on a completely stock shifter and everything.. Should I my problem be the same as yours?

You're going to have to check underneath the car. Too hard to tell from up top.

But there are only a few things that can cause that much play. The selector joint, a worn out selector rod, or the transmission itself, assuming everything is installed properly with the washers.

My money is on the selector joint. There is a foam ball inside to keep it tight and they wear out often.

I'll take a look under the car today. When I called the shop they said they would have replaced that sponge, but you never know, could it be the whole joint itself? The selector rod is the DSSR so that shouldnt be a problem.

If it were the transmission, would that be something that could be fixed? Or would I be looking at replacong it?

Could be on of the problems. But it is more likely due to overall ware and tare from age. Before I replaced my shifter, it had 270k on it. It felt like I could shift again after I had already shifted.

Was this amount of play in each gear before you replaced the shifter? It doesnt sound like its your transmission but if it is, you will prolly wanna look at a replacement unless you can rebuild yourself.

Yep, this has been here for a while, and was my initial reasoning for getting the SSK cause i'd get shorter throws and replace all the bushings I would have if I had just done an overall refresh. Apparently I was wrong...

Bingo. Easy to overlook because of the pain in the ass it is to get at.

yuppers, but the delerin/plastic that the linkage attaches to is worn as well. Presumably.
