Rattle Noise From under the car

So I had a similar noise a few months ago, but all it was, was a useless bracket for the exhaust system. Now a similar noise has returned when my vehicle is cold. Iím guessing I should put the car on some jacks turn it on and see where the noise is coming from? Is this very common with e46ís? It has 170 000 km.

Thanks

All cars have some sort of noise from time to time... be glad it makes a noise, at least you know something is wrong! :p Post a youtube vid of the noise, and some guys here might be able to help.

heat shield rattling??

Adrian_Lindn 01-03-2012 09:09 AM

would this be a big issue or a fix it your self?

It could be any number of things, either put the car up on jack stands and try to find the noise or get someone to check it out for you.

Best thing is usually to put it on a hoist and get it checked out. If you dont have the skill or tools take it into a shop to get looked at. There is a forum sponsor in your area.

Thanks

Part #6 rusted loose on my car and was rattling. I removed it, but it started rattling in another location until I replaced it with a new bracket. Was #6 what rusted on yours?

# 5 was loose and i removed it. I hvaent checked for the new noise yet. It could be one of those parts.

#5 is what I first noticed as well. It was actually loose and rattling, so I tried to tighten it and the rusted #10 bolt snapped. #2 was still rattling after that, so I removed it as well for a couple weeks, until I put the new parts on.
In the long run though, you really should replace 2,5,10.

maybe thats what it is? Ill be able to check easily once i put the car on some jack stands.

#6 was my issue.
A two second fix, just needed to be tightened.
Only made noise on certain angles. More of an annoyance than anything.

hey guys so im pretty sure i removed # 2 which was all corroded where it meets the bracket. Once i removed it the soound went away ( for now). From experience. Can anyone tell me if i should replace # 2 , #5 and #9????

Adrian_Lindn 01-21-2012 04:40 PM

Also, does # 9 connect with #10? #10 looks like a bolt not a nut? Can someone please clear this up!? Thanks alot!

jabela 01-22-2012 02:15 AM

You'll definitely want to replace that bracket. If you go without it, it may lead to the other exhaust supports failing due to extra stress.

I don't have parts #3 and 10 on my 5spd. Do you have an automatic?
I have parts 2 and 9 instead.
2/3 have a welded nut on them, where 9/10 screw into.

Can i just put a nut without welding it? Is this possible to replace my self instead of going to the dealer? I have a 5 spd as well. Can this be done without welding??
