Extended Maintence/Warranty

Anyone have any experience with extended maintenance/warranty on their BMW whether from BMW or a 3rd-Party company?

Is it worth it???

Thanks in advance.

It's basically a forced savings plan. If you have the self control to save some money each for future repair and prefer going to a good indy shop, then avoid the warranty. It's surprisingly limited and can be a pain to get the dealer to do work that should be covered.
So save the $2K+ for a rainy day. Odds are you won't have that much in repairs as long as you take good care of your car (regular oil changes, inspections, etc)

yes, you have to read the fine print as it is very limited indeed. Also the warranty coverage has specifics. So, if you were to blatantly neglect the car and there is reasonable doubt on their part they won't cover the repairs. they are REALLY sneaky that way. it's not meant to save you money...more like make them money. take the above advise. :-) Save your money!

Thanks Lads!
I know the BMW route is "pocket burner".
I've also heard having about $2000 on hand usually covers your for MOST stuff... unless you smash the car up! :p

Thanks for the awesome advice... I'll stick to my guns and pay out of pocket! :D

PS: I assume 3rd party is the same too?

$2000 is not going to cover all of the repairs you'll have on a E46. There are a lot of stupid things that go wrong with these cars.

But, the extended warranty in general is a waste of money because of the following easons.

A) You need to pay the first $50.00 per visit. The deductable varies slightly

B) You have to determine if it's warranty work to get covered. So, you'd have to pay Shop rates to find the problem, and then see if it is covered.

C) What does it cover.

BMW Certified Series Warranty is pretty good. The deductable thing is a pain.

If you can get the third party at "cost", it's worth it. If it's "retail"... the warranty company is making a lot of money off it.

The engine on these cars are not going to blow. If you have an auto, then consider it. :)

What repair on a e46 costs over 2000$? Except for M, you can replace a motor, or transmission or pretty much any majour component of the car for 2K.

If you smash your car up, that's insurance, not maintenance/warranty.

thats what I was thinking... no way $2000 will cover the life time of the car... but generally i think $2000 should cover you for the year.... with $$$ left over.

Just depends on how many "issues" you have with the car over the next 365 days.

:)
