Power steering fluid replacement
 
On the e46 is there a bleed screen for the power steering pump or just simply suck out the old fluid and replace with fresh fluid?

I found by sucking out the fluid and replacing worked easy. I would repeat process after a few days of driving until the fluid was nice and clear.

This is what I did.

suction the resovoir ... refill ... start car & turn wheel to both extremes ... stop car

repeat 5 times (or so)

I have done a power steering flush on a three different cars/vans in the past using the recommended method of disconnecting the return line, etc & honestly it's just not worth the pain PLUS it takes two people.

I thing the empty & refill method (done over & over) is just as effective.

I just suction out and refill with each oil change. Granted I never replace all the fluid that way, but it's in a constant state of newishness at all times.

I'm going to do the "suction out - refill" method on the X3 (3.0) this weekend.

Let's assume I repeat the process 5 times...any idea how much fluid I'd need.

I got away with using an empty 4liter plastic pop bottle...
You'd be surprised... there is quite a lot of fluid in there.
Remember use ATF!

The way I do it is undo the resevoir to pump line at the pump, and low pressure return from the rack. Let it all drain out, turn the wheel from side to side, this way you get 90% of the old fluid out, then you tighten it up and refill resevoir. The only old oil left is the high pressure side from pump to rack. You will need four new crush rings though (the larger diameter ones), and it's a good idea to replace the resevoir if the car over 200k, as the resevoir has an internal filter. Not mandatory, but for $60 for a new one it's cheaper than replacing a rack or pump.
