DIY Oil Change - E39 I6

I'm just about ready to begin doing my own oil changes. I bought a Mityvac 7201, and have a few filters en route from the US (with a few other items). Just trying to track down a 36mm in 3/8 socket (if you know who sells them nationally, please let me know - I'm in NB).

I'm looking at oils there is for our E39 (mine is an 03 530 M pkg). I see Crappy Tire has a Mobile 1, with BMW LL-01 approval. I also get my bike oil from Amsoil, where they have a BMW LL-04 approved product, 5w-40. An Esso distributor has Mob 1 0w40 as well a bit cheaper than Amsoil.
For all you do it yourselfers, what are you using for oil??
Thanks

I got my 36mm socket from Princess Auto.

I ended up getting my Mobil1 0w40 from the Esso distributor here in Ottawa at a really good price. I think it ended up being around $6.50 per litre. That was a few years ago, I'm sure the price has gone up.

I also have some BMW 5w30 that I got from a dealer. I bought 2 cases so they gave me a deal.

My two BMWs are the easiest oil changes I've done. Mainly because the oil filter is on the top.

Thanks. Just found one that the Car Quest franchises carry. It's a Lisle, low-profile and retails for $15. I had to email Lisle in the US but had a response within 2 hours (great response)

My next question, would the M-1 0w40 be a better year-round oil for Canada ??

Thanks

yes that is what I am using but might go back to BMW OEM as it is cheaper with Maranello BMW pricing.

Been using Mobile 0w40 since 2002

Keep in mind BMW oil burns in bimmers. It did in mine at least. Had to keep topping it off.
That was BMW high performance synthetic oil 5w-30

Where do you dispose the oils?

Princess Auto should carry that 36mm socket. As for the oil, I used to use Castrol Syntec which was great. Now I use Amsoil high performance oil for my car now and its excellent.

I checked with princess Auto, sears, and Crappy Tire, none had the socket. Luckily a carquest store ordered it for me, for $15. and, its a low profile, i.e. 1/2 depth socket. The label says its for ford truck, 6.XX liter engine.

I know in the US garages are required by law to accept used oil. I don't know what the law is in Canada

Rich, there is a recycle depot for oil and fluids on Rodick between Hwy#7 and 14th Ave.

You can leave your old oil at Canadian Tire as well. I just drop it off with the other 80 jugs by the garage door...
