S50/52 Implant

Jay,

What's the ballpark cost of dropping an S50 or S52 into my 325is?

Feel free to pm me, but I'm sure it's a common question, so I asked openly in case you want others to know the rough cost.

Geoff, how you doing man?

The swap cost varies by too much to list a set price on the forum. There are lots of options, from whether you want to drop everything in 100% as-is, to a basic Ins II freshening, to an all out replace-all-seals-I-want-this-thing-showroom-fresh type of swap. Of course, which of those motors you choose is a huge factor also as the S50 requires less labour and parts to work in your '95. Same deal with the transmission, do you want to keep your Getrag or move to the stronger ZF that the M3's came with? And so on...

Drop me a PM with your specifics and we'll take it from there. I promise we'll be the best value and be proud to put our name behind your swap.

Thanks Jay! I have the ZF 5spd swapped in already.

I'll drop you a line, but I'm just seeing what the different avenues are... I was thinking of an M engine, then S/C at a later date. Then I look at the Euro M engine and think, that's a happy medium for less than what the NA M + SC would cost.

If you're looking at a Euro motor then I'd point you towards the S54 swap. More reliable, easier to find parts, and more powerful. The S50B32 can be a great value up front but once you start importing regular wear items from Germany you start to understand the appeal of the S54.

Also, make sure you actually try out some of these motor setups. You may find that you dislike the power delivery of a centrifugal blower, as I personally do. They're great for numbers but really don't make the car as fast as you'd expect due to the high-rpm torque delivery.

I'd suggest revising your paths to the following:
1. S50/S52US (210-220rwhp)
2. S50/S52US with cams/boltons (240-250rwhp)
3. S54 (280+rwhp)

Just my personal opinion. In the spring you can come by the shop and feel just how entertaining an E36 chassis is with an S54B32 strapped into it. *th-up*

Thanks for the quick replies!

S54 - The purist in me wants to swap to a period motor and not blend generations.
S50B32 - Would your view be different knowing I'll drive <5k/yr and I get 25% off parts?
S50/S52 - What setup do you think is best value for power? What about OBD1 S52?

My use will be casual driving on my free time (if I ever get any!). Basically, after owning my Stg1 B5 S4, the e36 feels too slow (although it handles much better).

Geoff, if you're thinking of going the F/I route... I have a brand new AA kit that I bought a few years ago for my '94 325i but never got around to installing. I'm thinking of sticking with N/A since I switched to an S50 2 years ago and I'm pretty happy with it. Let me know if you're interested.

Thanks Ken but I don't think a FI M50 will give me what I want. Plus my M50 has 320km, so probably not the best motor to slap an AA kit onto!

Whoa, welcome back Geoff! I haven't seen you post in ages. I still remember when you sold me that intake years ago! How've you been?

PS. S54 swap all the way. Zimmie's car is an absolute monster.
